Seal Brown & Wild Agouti Brown (sometimes called Seal Brown), designated as 'At', is a mutation of the original Agouti allele. This differs from Agouti in that, instead of restricting or "erasing" the black colour pigment from the whole of the horse's body, it only affects the 'soft' parts - the nose, armpit, groin, point of the rump, sometimes the belly.

Phenotype Seal brown is a dark variation of bay, sometimes appearing to be almost black. However, areas around the muzzle, eye, flanks and other soft parts of the body are lighter coloured, often more yellowish. The back and crest of the neck are (nearly) black, and these dark hairs move downwards until they meet the lighter areas.

There is a proposed allele that darkens a bay coat to seal brown, and the sooty gene is linked to other forms of dark bay. Genetically, a chestnut horse is a horse without the ability to produce black pigment, while a black horse does not have dominant agouti to restrict their black pigment to points. The MC1R (extension) either binds alpha-MSH.

The brown mutation is denoted A t and is recessive to the wild type mutation (A). The order of dominance for the known agouti alleles is A, A t ,a. This means, that as long as the horse is allowed to express black pigment, (ie not ee) a horse with a genotype of AA t will be bay based while a horse that is A t A t or A t a will be brown based.
